Discover Media
Step-by-step guide to updating maps - Discover media

Here we show you step by step how to download the new map material for your Volkswagen Discover Media and import it into the navigation system.

Prerequisites for the navigation map update:

1. You need the SD-CDA card containing the previous map data from your navigation system. The SD card is inserted in SD card slot 2 at the factory.

2. To ensure trouble-free reproduction of the data, nothing apart from the navigation data should be stored on the SD-CDA card.

3. The map material may take up over 5.6 GB of memory, meaning you must have at least this much space free on your computer’s hard drive. Your computer’s hard drive must be NTFS-formatted to handle such large files. This is the standard system used on newer computers. If you have an older computer, check the hard drive formatting by right-clicking on the hard drive icon in the Explorer and selecting “Properties”.

Step 1: Which version do I currently have installed and which version is available as an update?

undefined

You can check the current version of your map data in your Discover Media system by pressing the “NAV” button. In the display, confirm the option “Setup” > “Version information”.

Step 2: Save the previous map material

We recommend that you make a backup copy of the previous map material.

1. To do this, remove the SD card with the map data from slot 2 of your Discover Media and insert it in your computer’s SD card slot or a connected SD card reader.

2. Create a folder on your computer for storing the backup copy of the map data.

3. Copy all data from the SD card to the folder you just created on your computer.

Step 3: Installation instruction

If you don’t have the latest version as described above the latest version can be downloaded from the following link.

Download the latest update here

ENSURE YOU overwrite the old data with the new data found on in your navigation system in the glove box (slot 2). Your SD card will need to be blank prior to updating.

Follow the PDF instruction attached on formatting your SD before updating.

Step 4: Importing the data into the navigation system (on the vehicle)

1.  Place the SD card back into slot 2 of your Discover Media system.

2.  The updated navigation maps will become available as soon as the system recognises the reinserted SD card.

Please note:
Because the navigation data are stored on the SD card meaning it has to stay in the vehicle, the card is subject to extreme environmental conditions. In order to ensure that the navigation system keeps functioning correctly, your Discover Media will only accept Volkswagen-approved SD cards. If your original card is lost or damaged, you can obtain a replacement from your local Volkswagen service partner.

Discover Media Pro
Step-by-step guide to updating maps - Discover Pro

Here we show you step by step how to download the new map material for your Volkswagen Discover Pro and import it into the navigation system.

Prerequisites:

1. You need an SD card with at least 32 GB of memory to update your navigation data. Volkswagen recommends using a class 10/SDHC card, which is widely available from retailers.

2. The map material may take up to 17 GB of memory, meaning you must have at least this much space free on your computer’s hard drive.

1. You can check the current version of your map data in your Discover Pro system by pressing the “NAV” button. In the display, confirm the option “Setup” > “System Version information”.

Step 2: Downloading the new data

1. Click the following links below, where the latest data is available to download. Due to the large volume of data (currently approx. 17 GB), we recommend downloading it in two batches.

Download Part 1 here

Download Part 2 here

2. Download all of the files for the new version and save them together in a new folder (e.g. “Map Update”) on your computer.

3. Slide the switch on the SD card into the “Unlock” position.

4. Insert the SD card into your computer’s SD card slot or external card reader.

5. Delete all data on the SD card or reformat the card. The procedure for doing this depends on the operating system: in Windows, navigate to the SD card drive, right-click on it and select “Format”. For other operating systems, please follow the manufacturer's instructions.

6. Extract the files to the SD card.

7. Once extraction is complete, remove the SD card from your computer or the card reader. Now slide the switch on the SD card down again into the “Lock” position.

8. There must be no other files on the SD card.

Please note:
The ignition must remain switched on while copying is in progress. The navigation function is not available during copying. Due to the large volume of data involved and depending on the SD card used, this procedure can take up to 4 hours. Please make sure that the battery is sufficiently charged to complete the update (if the vehicle is parked, switch off any consumers that are not needed, e.g. lighting, fan, seat heating, etc.).

If necessary, connect a charger to the battery. Should the procedure be interrupted – if the engine is switched off, for example – copying will automatically resume at the point of interruption as soon as the ignition is switched on again.
