Electric future, familiar name: Volkswagen unveils ID. Tiguan
Volkswagen's latest electric SUV makes its global debut
Auckland, New Zealand, October 2026 – Volkswagen has today unveiled the ID. Tiguan, the latest addition to the brand's growing family of electric vehicles and a significant milestone in Volkswagen's next generation of battery electric mobility.
Making its world premiere today, the ID. Tiguan signals a new chapter in Volkswagen's electric future. The ID. Tiguan combines Volkswagen's latest technologies, enhanced usability and a refined customer experience, while expanding the brand's global electric SUV offering.
For New Zealand, the unveiling carries particular significance. For years, Tiguan has been a cornerstone of Volkswagen's New Zealand’s local line-up and remains the brand's best-selling passenger vehicle, earning its place as a favourite among Kiwi families, professionals and adventure-seekers alike through its versatility, comfort and practicality.
The introduction of ID. Tiguan in 2027 will not replace the existing Tiguan range. Volkswagen will continue to offer Tiguan with traditional powertrain options, while ID. Tiguan will provide an additional battery electric SUV option for customers seeking the benefits of electric mobility.
The new ID. Tiguan represents a significant step forward for Volkswagen's electric vehicle portfolio, introducing a new generation of electric SUV that combines the brand's latest technology, design and customer-focused innovation. The model joins a growing global portfolio of electric vehicles, as Volkswagen continues to expand its battery electric vehicle line-up across multiple segments.
While the ID. Tiguan sits alongside the existing Tiguan range, it carries forward many of the qualities that have contributed to the nameplate's success, including practicality, versatility and broad customer appeal.
The ID. Tiguan introduces a redesigned cabin experience, including the return of physical controls for key functions, alongside generous interior space, intuitive technology and everyday practicality. Combined with smooth electric performance, instant torque delivery and refined comfort, the ID. Tiguan has been designed to meet the demands of modern SUV customers.
"The Tiguan nameplate has played an important role in Volkswagen's success story in New Zealand and remains the brand's best-selling model" said Chanelle McDonald, General Manager at Volkswagen New Zealand.
"As our best-selling vehicle locally, Tiguan has earned a strong reputation with Kiwi customers over many years. The introduction of ID. Tiguan is significant because it extends that success into the electric vehicle space, giving customers another way to experience the qualities they know and value from Volkswagen SUVs while embracing the latest generation of electric mobility.”
Globally, more than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles have been produced, helping establish the nameplate as Volkswagen's best-selling vehicle worldwide. The unveiling of ID. Tiguan further expands Volkswagen's electric vehicle offering and reflects the brand's ongoing commitment to providing customers with greater choice as the transition toward electrification continues.
Further information, including New Zealand specifications, pricing and timing, will be announced closer to the model's planned local introduction.
